Instagrammer in Residence

Sue Armitage (July 2019)

'I’m a Primary School teacher and I’m lucky enough to spend a large part of my week sharing my love of art with children.

Whenever I have time to do some creative work myself, I enjoy photography and l like to experiment with analogue processes such as cyanotype. But I also love smartphone photography.'

'A few years ago, I caught the Instagram habit from my teenage daughter and I think that, at its best, it helps you tune into the beauty of the world around you.

Some Instagram accounts are exquisitely curated, but mine is more of a messy sketchbook: a collection of things that inspire me when I’m out and about in my everyday life.'

What inspires you about the Barbican?

'I’m a big fan of Brutalism: I love the striking simplicity of its lines and its solid geometry.

To me the Barbican has a classical grandeur. This sounds contradictory in terms of architectural principles, but in terms of its powerful gut impact, there is something about the monumental towers and crescents that reminds me of Ancient Rome.'
